Are you looking to squeeze every last drop of performance out of your Intel Core i5 processor? Whether you are trying to maintain a rock-solid 144+ FPS in demanding tactical shooters like Battlefield and Call of Duty, or you simply want faster rendering times, overclocking is the way to go.
In this comprehensive guide, we will walk you through the safest and most effective way to overclock the Intel Core i5-12600K, i5-13600K, and i5-14600K using popular Z690 and Z790 motherboards (such as the MSI PRO Z790-P, ASUS Prime Z790-P, and Gigabyte Z790 UD).
⚠️ Pre-Flight Checklist: What You Need Before Overclocking
Before we jump into the BIOS, you must ensure your system is properly equipped to handle the extra heat and power draw.
A High-End CPU Cooler: Overclocking generates massive amounts of heat. You need a premium dual-tower air cooler or a 240mm/360mm AIO Liquid Cooler. A stock cooler will NOT work.
A Reliable Power Supply (PSU): Ensure you have a high-quality PSU (750W or higher, 80+ Gold rated) to provide stable power.
A Z-Series Motherboard: Overclocking is officially supported only on Z690, Z790, or Z890 chipsets.
Testing Software: Download Cinebench R23 (for stress testing) and HWiNFO64 (for monitoring temperatures and voltages).
Step 1: Update Your BIOS and Enable XMP
Before altering CPU frequencies, make sure your system foundation is stable.
Go to your motherboard manufacturer’s website and download the latest BIOS version. Update it using a USB flash drive.
Restart your PC and repeatedly press DEL or F2 to enter the BIOS.
Find the memory settings and enable XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) or EXPO. This ensures your RAM runs at its advertised speeds, preventing bottlenecks.
Step 2: Adjusting CPU Core Ratios (The Overclock)
Intel’s modern CPUs use a hybrid architecture consisting of P-Cores (Performance) and E-Cores (Efficiency). For gaming, we will focus mainly on pushing the P-Cores.
In your BIOS, switch to Advanced Mode (Usually F7).
Navigate to the Overclocking section (named OC Tweaker on ASUS, OC on MSI, or Tweaker on Gigabyte).
Change the CPU Ratio Apply Mode to All Core.
Set the P-Core Ratio (Multiplier).

Find the CPU Core Voltage setting. Change it from Auto to Manual / Override Mode.
Type in a safe starting voltage. A good starting point for these i5 chips is 1.25V to 1.30V.
Warning: For daily use and gaming, try to stay strictly under 1.35V to prevent CPU degradation.
Locate Load Line Calibration (LLC) in your DIGI+ VRM or Power settings. Set this to a medium level (e.g., Level 3 or 4 on ASUS, Mode 3 or 4 on MSI). LLC prevents the voltage from dropping when the CPU is under heavy load.
Step 4: Save, Reboot, and Stress Test
Press F10 to save your BIOS settings and restart into Windows.
Open HWiNFO64 (Sensors only) and leave it running in the background to monitor "CPU Package Temp".
Open Cinebench R23 and run the 10-minute Multi-Core test.
How to read the results:
Scenario A (Stable): The test completes without crashing, and temperatures stay below 85°C–90°C. Your overclock is successful!
