How to Overclock Intel Core i9-10900K & 11900K (Safe Beginner's Guide)


So, you have an Intel Core i9-10900K or an i9-11900K. Even today, these processors are absolute monsters. But here is the truth: if you are running them on their default factory settings, you are leaving free performance on the table.

Whether you want to squeeze out a few more frames in Cyberpunk 2077 or speed up your video rendering times, overclocking is the answer. But wait—overclocking an i9 sounds scary, right?

Not anymore. In this ultimate beginner's guide, we will walk you through exactly how to safely overclock your i9 on premium motherboards like the ASUS ROG Maximus XII (Z490) or the MSI MEG Z590. Even if you have never entered a BIOS screen before, you will understand this.


🏎️ The "Car Engine" Rule (Understand Overclocking in 10 Seconds)

Before we touch anything, let’s make this super simple to understand:

  • The Clock Speed (Multiplier): This is the speed limit of your car. We are going to raise the limit so the car goes faster.
  • The Voltage (VCore): This is the gas/fuel. To go faster, your car needs more fuel. But if you flood the engine with too much fuel, it overheats.
  • The Motherboard (VRM): Boards like the MSI MEG and ASUS Maximus are like heavy-duty fuel pumps. They deliver clean, stable power so the engine doesn't stutter.
⚠️ THE REALITY CHECK: These Chips Run HOT!
The i9-10900K and 11900K are notorious for getting extremely hot. Do not attempt this guide if you are using a cheap air cooler. You MUST have a high-end 360mm Liquid AIO Cooler (like Corsair, NZXT, or Arctic) and at least an 850W Gold Power Supply.

⚙️ Step 1: Prep Work and XMP Enable

First, restart your PC and repeatedly tap the DEL (Delete) or F2 key until you enter the BIOS.

Before we touch the CPU, let's max out your RAM. Look for the button that says XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) on the main screen and turn it ON. Press F7 to enter Advanced Mode.


🚀 Step 2: Setting the Speed Limit (CPU Ratio)

Now, let's push the limits. Navigate to the "Extreme Tweaker" (ASUS) or "OC" (MSI) tab.

  1. Find CPU Core Ratio or CPU Multiplier.
  2. Change the setting to "Sync All Cores" (ASUS) or "All Core" (MSI).
  3. Enter your target speed:
    • Safe Start: Type 50 (This equals 5.0 GHz across all cores).
    • Pushing it: Type 51 (5.1 GHz).

*Note: The i9-10900K has 10 cores, and the 11900K has 8 cores. Pushing all of them to 5.0GHz+ at the same time is a massive upgrade!


⚡ Step 3: Feeding the Beast (Voltage & LLC)

Since we raised the speed limit, we need to manually provide enough power so the PC doesn't crash while gaming.

Part A: Load Line Calibration (LLC)

When a CPU works hard, voltage tends to drop (V-Droop). LLC prevents this.

  • On ASUS Maximus XII: Go to Digi+ VRM menu -> set CPU Load-line Calibration to Level 4.
  • On MSI MEG Z590: Go to DigitALL Power -> set CPU Loadline Calibration Control to Mode 3 or Mode 4.

Part B: CPU Core Voltage (VCore)

  1. Scroll down to CPU Core Voltage.
  2. Change it from "Auto" to "Manual Mode" or "Override Mode".
  3. Type in 1.32V as your starting point. (Never exceed 1.38V for daily gaming).

Press F10 to Save and Exit. Your PC will now reboot.


🔥 Step 4: The Stress Test (Did we succeed?)

If you see the Windows login screen, give yourself a pat on the back! But we aren't done yet. We need to make sure the system is stable.

Download two free tools: Cinebench R23 (to stress the CPU) and HWiNFO64 (to monitor temperatures).

  1. Open HWiNFO64 and look at "CPU Package Temperature".
  2. Open Cinebench R23 and run the 10-minute Multi-Core Test.

How to read the results:

  • Passed & Cool: No crashes and temperatures stayed under 90°C. You win!
  • 🥶 Passed but VERY Cool (Under 80°C): You have amazing cooling! You can go back to BIOS and try 5.1 GHz (Multiplier 51).
  • PC Crashed / Blue Screen: The CPU needs a bit more fuel. Go to BIOS and raise the voltage from 1.32V to 1.34V.
  • 🚨 Too Hot (Hitting 95°C+): The CPU is getting too much power. Stop the test immediately. Go to BIOS and lower the voltage to 1.30V, or drop the Multiplier to 49.
