If you are trying to play Battlefield: Bad Company 2 online today, you have probably noticed that you cannot connect to any matches.
In December 2023, EA officially shut down the multiplayer servers for Bad Company 2, leaving thousands of fans heartbroken. But wait—the game is not dead! The dedicated PC gaming community has brought the game back to life using a completely free, safe custom server project called Project Rome.
Right now, there are active servers full of players from the US, UK, and Europe enjoying the classic Rush and Conquest modes. In this simple, step-by-step guide, I will show you exactly how to bypass the official dead servers and play Battlefield: Bad Company 2 online again!
What You Need to Play BC2 Online
Before we jump in, make sure you have the following ready:
The Base Game: A legally installed copy of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on your PC (from Steam or the EA App).
An Internet Connection.
Project Rome: A tiny, free, and safe file created by the community that allows you to connect to the new private servers.
Step-by-Step Guide to Fixing Bad Company 2 Multiplayer
Step 1: Download the Project Rome Client
To connect to the new community servers, we need a special file that redirects the game away from the dead EA servers.
Open Google and search for "Project Rome Venice Unleashed".
Go to their official website and click on the Download button for the Bad Company 2 client.
The file you download will be named
dinput8.dll. (It is very small and downloads instantly).
Step 2: Find Your Game Folder
Next, you need to place that downloaded file right into your game folder. Here is how to find it:
If you use Steam: Go to your Steam Library, right-click on Battlefield: Bad Company 2, select Manage, and click Browse local files.
If you use the EA App: Go to your installed games, click the three dots on the game, select View Properties, and click Browse.
Step 3: Install the Fix (Copy & Paste)
This is the easiest part!
Find the
dinput8.dllfile you downloaded in Step 1. Right-click on it and select Copy.Go to your open Bad Company 2 game folder.
Right-click on an empty space inside that folder and select Paste.
That is it! The game is now modified to use the new servers.
Step 4: Create a Free Project Rome Account
Because we are no longer using official EA servers, your old EA account will not work for multiplayer. You need a new login.
Go back to the Project Rome website.
Look for the Register or Sign Up button.
Create a free account (choose a username, email, and password). Remember this login information, because you will need it inside the game!
Step 5: Launch the Game and Play!
You are all set. Now it is time to get back into the action!
Open Bad Company 2 normally through Steam or the EA App.
Click on Multiplayer in the main menu.
A login screen will appear. Do not use your EA account. Instead, type in the Project Rome username and password you just created in Step 4.
Check the "Remember Password" box and click Login.
Click on the Server Browser, hit the Search button, and watch as a list of active, populated servers appears on your screen!
