The hype is real! With the highly anticipated release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 officially set for October 23, 2026, fans are eagerly counting down the days. Developed by Infinity Ward, this year's entry promises massive changes, including a return to a stiffer, traditional movement system, the brand-new "Apex Attachments" system, and a highly requested Classic Prestige path.
But you do not have to wait until October to jump into the action. The MW4 Beta is right around the corner! Unlike previous years, you will not have to launch the massive "Call of Duty HQ" app to play; the beta is completely standalone this time around.
Here is everything you need to know to download, access, and play the Modern Warfare 4 Beta on all platforms.
Modern Warfare 4 Beta Schedule: When Does It Start?
Activision has split the beta into two action-packed weekends. Make sure to mark your calendars!
Weekend 1 (Early Access): August 21 – August 25.
Who can play: You must have a digital pre-order, a physical retail code, or an official promotional code to play this weekend.
Weekend 2 (Open Beta): August 28 – September 1.
Who can play: Everyone! This weekend is completely free and open to all players across all platforms. No codes are required.
Important Note: Before you begin, make sure you have an Activision Account linked to your platform. This ensures your beta progression and any exclusive launch rewards are saved properly.
How to Download the MW4 Beta (Platform Guide)
Modern Warfare 4 is launching across all major platforms, including the new Nintendo Switch 2. Find your platform below for exact download instructions.
🎮 PlayStation 5
Turn on your PS5 and open the PlayStation Store.
Search for "Modern Warfare 4 Beta".
Hit Download. If you pre-ordered the digital edition, your early access will automatically unlock for Weekend 1.
🟢 Xbox Series X/S
Open the Xbox Store from your dashboard.
Search for "Modern Warfare 4 Beta" and select Install.
Tip for Xbox on PC players: You will download a very small installer at first. The rest of the large game files will automatically download right as the beta servers go live.
💻 PC (Steam & Battle.net)
Steam: Open the Steam Store, search for Modern Warfare 4, and look for the Beta section on the game page. Click Play Now to add it to your library.
Battle.net: Go to the Call of Duty tab, click the "Game Version" dropdown menu, select MW4 Beta, and click Install.
Keep in mind that pushing the graphics on this 2026 next-gen engine requires serious hardware. An Intel Core i5-6400 CPU paired with Intel HD Graphics 530 and 8GB of RAM will not meet the minimum requirements, so a dedicated GPU and memory upgrade will be necessary to run the beta smoothly.
🔴 Nintendo Switch 2 (Weekend 2 Only)
Pre-loading for the Switch 2 opens on August 26 at 9:00 AM PT.
Open the Nintendo eShop and search for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 Beta.
Download it directly to your console.
Note: You will need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership to play multiplayer matches.
How to Redeem a Beta Code
Did you get lucky and score a beta code from Discord Nitro, a retail store receipt, or a social media giveaway? Here is how to claim it for Weekend 1:
Visit the official Call of Duty Beta Redeem Page.
Log into your Activision account.
Type in your code and select your preferred gaming platform.
Your final, platform-specific download token will pop up on the screen and also be sent to your email.
