Do you miss the golden days of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)?
If you try to play the official version on Steam today, you will probably run into broken matchmaking or servers filled with hackers. It is not safe or fun anymore. But there is great news! The PC gaming community has created a safe, custom version called IW4x that lets you play the game just like the good old days.
Thousands of players in the US, UK, and Europe are playing it right now. Even if you are not good with computers, this step-by-step guide will show you exactly how to join them in just a few minutes.
What You Need
Before we start, you only need three things:
The Game: The original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) installed on your PC.
An Internet Connection: To download the small fix.
The AlterWare Launcher (IW4x): A completely safe, free community tool that adds a server browser and anti-cheat to your game.
Step-by-Step Guide to Fixing MW2 Multiplayer
Step 1: Find Your Game Folder
First, you need to know where your Modern Warfare 2 game is installed on your computer.
If you have the game on Steam: Right-click the game in your library, go to Manage, and click Browse local files.
Keep this folder open on your screen. You will need it in Step 3!
Step 2: Download the Launcher
Because the official servers are broken, we need a safe launcher to find matches.
Open Google and search for "AlterWare Launcher download".
Click on the official AlterWare GitHub page.
Download the file named
alterware-launcher.exe. It is a very small file.
Step 3: Put the File in Your Game Folder
This step is super easy. All you have to do is copy and paste!
Find the
alterware-launcher.exefile you just downloaded. Right-click it and select Copy.Go to your open Modern Warfare 2 game folder (from Step 1).
Right-click on an empty space inside that folder and select Paste.
Step 4: Run the Launcher and Play!
You are almost done!
Inside your game folder, double-click the
alterware-launcher.exefile.A black screen will pop up and automatically download the needed IW4x files. Just let it finish. It will take a few minutes depending on your internet speed.
When it is done, the game will open automatically!
How to Join a Match
Now that the game is open, joining a match is very simple:
Click on Join Game or Server Browser in the main menu.
A big list of active servers will pop up.
Look for a server with players in it and a low "Ping" number (a lower number means your game will be smoother).
Double-click the server name to join the match!
Welcome Back to 2009!
